Booklist Review

A direct descendant of a great unicorn hunter, Astrid Llewelyn has inherited the unique ability to hunt the many species of this horrific beast. She doesn't know it, though, until her lecherous boyfriend is gored by a unicorn while single-mindedly pursuing his goal with Astrid on a blanket in the woods. So begins Astrid's journey toward her true identity among a new generation of a long-forgotten breed of warrior born to fight a foe mistakenly assumed extinct. In an Italian cloister, Astrid joins a group of young women from around the world brought together for their special abilities to defend against a creature very unlike the gentle beauties of myth. This is an intriguing reimagining of certain appeal to fantasy lovers, but it may leave readers wanting a greater understanding of the beasts' motivations as balance to their unrelenting viciousness. Girls-school politics and a touch of romance hold additional attraction. At its core, this is a story of considerable violence on all parts, humans included, and not for the faint of heart.--Koelling, Holly Copyright 2009 Booklist

Forget everything you ever knew about unicorns . . .

Real unicorns are venomous, man-eating monsters with huge fangs and razor-sharp horns. Fortunately, they've been extinct for a hundred and fifty years.

Or not.

Astrid had always scoffed at her eccentric mother's stories about killer unicorns. But when one of the monsters attacks her boyfriend--thereby ruining any chance of him taking her to the prom--Astrid finds herself headed to Rome to train as a unicorn hunter at the ancient cloisters the hunters have used for centuries.

However, at the cloisters all is not what it seems. Outside, the unicorns wait to attack. And within, Astrid faces other, unexpected threats: from the crumbling, bone-covered walls that vibrate with a terrible power to the hidden agendas of her fellow hunters to--perhaps most dangerously of all--her growing attraction to a handsome art student . . . an attraction that could jeopardize everything.
